Look for the CE Mark
Machinery without CE certification leaves owners at huge risk

komatsu From shavers to excavators, new products placed on the European market must be CE certified. CE certification shows the machine complies with all relevant EU legislation. It also provides owners with important legal protection in case of malfunction. A CE-certified product carries the familiar CE mark. It must also have an EC declaration of conformity issued by the manufacturer or its authorised representative. This unique document must stay with the product throughout its lifetime "“ like an ID card or passport. Together, the CE mark and declaration of conformity are official signs that the machine meets all relevant EU legislation.

 

komatsu For Komatsu's products, this legislation covers things like essential health and safety requirements (the Machinery Directive), electromagnetic compatibility and environmental noise and engine exhaust emissions. Despite extensive checks, some machines that aren't CE certified are available in Europe. Some may even have an illegitimate CE mark and / or declaration of conformity.

 

komatsu These machines are often offered at low prices. However, they come with huge risks attached. Firstly, you could face problems with servicing and getting suitable spare parts. More seriously, if a non-CE-certified machine is involved in an accident, the machine's owner is liable and will have to pay the potentially huge costs. In addition, tampering with the CE mark or declaration of conformity could result in criminal proceedings against anybody directly or indirectly involved. So the next time you're buying a machine, whether new or used, look for the CE mark and check it meets the official rules. Also make sure the machine has an official, legitimately issued declaration of conformity. If you are in any doubt over the authenticity of the machine's CE certification, immediately contact the manufacturer or your local dealer quoting the vehicle's serial number. One phone call could prevent a dangerous and very costly mistake.
