The power to meet Stage IIIA emissions regulations
 ECOT3 In January, the European Union began phasing in new engine emission regulations. These Stage IIIA regulations aim to considerably reduce diesel emissions from off -road construction equipment. Building on 70 years experience in off -road engine development, Komatsu is releasing a new range of clean diesel engines that meet these regulations and deliver outstanding power and fuel efficiency.

Diesel engines produce relatively small amounts of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas. However, they do emit nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), and concerns about the effects of these pollutants on the atmosphere and human body have driven the creation of the new regulations. NOx is produced during high-temperature combustion while PM is emitted at lower temperatures. So reducing both without harming fuel efficiency is a big challenge.
Komatsu has met this challenge with our innovative, new ECOT3 engine range. ECOT3 engines feature a heavy-duty high-pressure common rail (HCPR) fuel injection system that precisely controls the amount of fuel injected into each cylinder, and a heavy-duty cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system to return low oxygen exhaust gases to the combustion cylinders. The blend of advanced technologies is completed by air-to-air charge air cooling, total electronic control and a new combustion chamber design. Together these systems significantly reduce NOx, PM, noise and fuel consumption while boosting engine power.
